Sorry, but my mother told me I can't play with you Japs anymore
Come play with us!
My family and I moved to Canada from Japan when my sister and I were three years old. I don't remember anything from Japan, all I know is my home here in Canada. My father is a fisherman, and my mother stays home with my sister, me, and our dog.
But... but.. I'm only a fisherman!
Sir, we are here to confiscate your boat
Partway through December people started treating us differently, I don't know why. Our friends wouldn't play with us anymore and no one would talk to us in public
Once every week, my father took me out on his boat. It was my favourite part of the week. This week, we were just about to get on and two officers showed up demanding my father's boat! I was so scared, I didn't know what to do.
One day, authorities came and knocked on our door. They said they came for my father and he had to leave. I didn't even get to say goodbye. They said they are taking him to a sugar beet farm in Taber, Alberta. That's so far away!
The authorities were back again today. They told us that they need to take my mom, sister, and me to some camp called Hastings Park in Vancouver. I don't want to leave home and my dog, but they said we have to leave now.
