  • Lily
  • “Most people don’t have any idea about all the complicated life going on inside a hive. Bees have a secret life we don’t know anything about” (Kidd 148).
  • Rosaleen
  • I was the only one who knew that despite her sharp ways, her heart was more tender than a flower skin and she loved me beyond reason.
  • August
  • “She was tall, dressed in white, wearing a pith helmet with veils that floated across her face, settled around her shoulders, and trailed down her back She looked like an African bride” (Kidd 67).
  • even though lily is only 14 years old she has been through a lot and most people don't see it and think shes to young to have gone through anything bad in her life.
  • May
  • Rosaleen is the African american lady that has been taking care of lily since she was very young. shes also a very strong and brave person
  • June
  • August is a very kind women. shes the only African american women that lily knows that has her own business and is independent during the 1960's.
  • Zach
  •  “We can’t think of changing our skin,” he said. “Change the world—that’s how we gotta think” (Kidd 216).
  • May was a very sensitive person because when she was younger her twin sister committed suicide, after that every bad situation or experience anyone had she would take it to heart and she has everyone's feelings in her.
  • "one of those odd grins that let you know she was not an altogether normal person... she was special."
  • June is the sister that is racist and and also has been hurt a lot. at first she doesn't like lily because shes white and she doesn't trust her, but the more lily and June get to know each other the more they realize that the color of your skin doesn't matter
  • “But she’s white, August” (Kidd 87)
  • Zach is the kind of boy that is tired of everyone segregating them because of their skin color. he wants everyone to just realize that skin color isn't something to make people be better then others.
