  • How it all started
  • Gaulladet goes to France
  • Gaulladet meets Clerc
  • Alice is a deaf child, put apart from other children by her lack of language. Gaulladet notices this and wants to help Alice learn a language.
  • They go back to the US
  • Gaulladet is selected to go to France to learn how to teach deaf people by a board of "city fathers".
  • Learning and Adapting
  • Clerc shows off his knowledge in a demonstration in a town square, where Gaulladet takes notice. He enlists Clerc to teach him how to sign
  • Gaulladet Legacy
  • After much tutoring, motivated by low funds, Gaulladet goes back to the US with Clerc to establish to first school for the deaf in the United States.
  • Clerc and Gaulladet establish "The American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb Persons" on april 15th, 1817. Students there learned and changed the signs they were taught to their liking, creating the ASL we know today
  • Thomas Gaulladet's son, Edward Miner Gaulladet, established Gaulladet University in Washington DC as the first deaf college.
