  • In 1619 the first black slaves from Africa are brought to America in Virginia and sold. 
  • "He pulled himself painfully upright and moved towards the door"
  • In 1787 slavery is made illegal in the north West territory but it is not banned fully.
  • " 'Well, you keep your place then, Nigger. I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain't even funny. ' Crooks reduced himself to nothing"
  • In April 1865 the North won the American civil war. In  December 1865 the 13th amendment to the constitution bans slavery.

  •  In 1898 the 14th amendment means that anyone born in the USA is a citizen, not a slave, regardless of colour.
  • In 1898 Louisiana banned most black from having the right to vote. In 1902, buses begin to be segregated so black and white people must sit apart.
  • In 1913 Segregation began across workplaces, lunch rooms and rest rooms.
