Hey! So I was wondering if you wanted to go to this party with me tonight?
You have heard about this party at school and know that there will be drinking. You have also heard of similar parties before that have been busted by the police and people have gotten arrested and put in the hospital.
Ya let me get back to you later today.
So I have three options. I can go with Allison to the party, I can tell her I don't want to go and let her go or I can suggest we do something else.
If I just tell my friend that I can't go and let her go she won't be disappointed with me and I won't be at risk but Allison may be at risk.
If I go to the party it could be a lot of fun but I don't know if I would end up drinking and I could have legal consequences and possibly get hurt. Plus I don't want to start drinking until it is legal.
If I suggest we do something else both of us won't be at risk but Allison might be disappointed that she won't get to go.
I have come to the decision that I will suggest to do something else with Allison. It is the least risky and most healthy option even though she might be disappointed. I will tell Allison at lunch today.
Do you want to go see a movie with me instead tonight? This party will have drinking and drinking to much alcohol can result in alcohol poisoning which can be life threatening, heavy drinking can weaken the heart and people who begin drinking before 15 are more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who start at age 21.
Oh! Those are some scary facts! Ya let's go see a movie instead.
The next day you are checking the news on your phone. You see that last night at the party you were going to go to seven people were arrested and two were sent to the hospital for alcohol poisoning. You are happy with your decision to go to the movies instead because you didn't put yourself in a situation that would have been risky. Plus you enjoyed the movie!
