  • A German U-boat torpedoed a British passenger ship, the Lusitania, killing more than 1,000 people, including 128 Americans. The Government of the United States and the Imperial German Government are contending forthe freedom of the seas.
  • Germany issued the Sussex Pledge, promising to suspend its surprise attacks on merchant vessels. Zimmermann proposed that, if the US entered the war, Mexico go to war with the US as a German ally.
  • Wilson called Congress to declare war on Germany in order to protect Democracy n 1917.
