Storyboard Text

  • This stanza is the opening one, where the Mariner stops one of the three who entered the wedding, and the one stopped questions why he doth so.
  • By thy long grey beard and glittering eye, now wherefore stopp'st thou me?
  •  It is an ancient Mariner and he stoppeth one of three.
  • This stanza is where the Mariner snares the Wedding-Guest's attention, holding it hostage for the entirety of the story.
  •   He holds him with his glittering eye--the Wedding-Guest stood still, and listens like a three years child: The Mariner hath his will.
  •  At length did cross an Albatross: thorough the fog it came; as if it had been a Christian soul, we hailed it in God's name.
  • This shows the introduction to the Albatross, a key figure in the story, they see it in the distance, through the fog, and called it in the Lord's name.
  •     "God save thee, ancient Mariner! From the fiends, that plague thee thus!--Why look'st thou so?"--With my cross-bow I shot the ALBATROSS.
  • Key point in the story, where the Mariner shoots the Albatross, along with the Wedding-Guest reacting to his facial expressions in the real world.
  •   Ah! well a-day! what evil looks had I from old and young! Instead of the cross, the Albatross about my neck was hung.
  • The Albatross is hung around the Mariner's neck, as a sign from the crew that he was the reason for their misforture for the wind's absence and their thirst.
  •  With throats unslaked, with black lips baked, we could not laugh nor wail; through utter drought all dumb we stood! I bit my arm, I sucked the blood, and cried, A sail! a sail!
  • The Mariner spots a ship in the distance, though completely dehydrated he knew he must tell the crew, so he bites his arm and sucks on the blood in order to tell them.
