  • “He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish”(1).
  • Evidence Explanation: After 84 days of no fish the old man kept going out every day and kept trying tocatch fish.
  • Authors Purpose : Hemmingway's purpose was to entertain his readers.
  • Authors purpose symbol: Thinking bubble Hemmingway entertained us by sharing Santiagos dreams which were about storms, lions on a beach, and a woman.
  • Intended audience symbol: The Old Man and the Sea was intended for anyone. Just the people who struggle with depression may see the theme easier than others. The sky symbolizes the (almost) endless limit for who can read The Old Man in the Sea.
