  • Stuff That Has Happened To Me
  • Doorknobs and doors appear throughout the book. I believe that they symbolize the choice the grandpa has to make between moving on with life. He isn't able to pick whether he wants to move on or if he wants to stay in the past, which leaves him not able to open or close any doors.
  • In the book, Oskar finds a key in his father's closet. This key symbolizes the hope Oskar has to reconnecting to his dead father. Oskar holds on the key through the book trying to see if it would lead him to a bigger journey.
  • The box of 'Stuff That Has Happened To Me,' is a box Oskar puts things that have "happened to him" in. The only thing is that none of the things happened to him. This box symbolizes how Oskar feels connected to people so he will put the things that happened to him in the box.
