First, I'm going to give you a memory of snow, Jonas.
I wonder what snow is, and what does downhill mean?
The Giver gave Jonas the memory of snow. However, Jonas didn't understand why they went to sameness or why snow couldn't be allowed.
This is amazing! Why can'y we have snow, and sledding, and downhill?
Why can't we have snow? It was so wonderful, Giver! Why would they ever get rid of it?!
Now, do you know what these things I have mentioned are now, Jonas?
Then, the Giver explained why the generations before them had decided on sameness, and slowly Jonas started to understand.
Snow made growing food difficult, and limited the agricultural periods. Also, it made transportation difficult. The decision was unanimous to decide. Weather became obsolete when we went to sameness (Lowry 83).
I guess that makes sense.
Even though something is so wonderful, it might still have some negative effects. Do you understand why we went to sameness, and how it benefits them?
So do I. But that is not our choice. Now, you must be getting home.
I do. The snow was just perfect, though. I wish we still had those things.
I understand why we can't have snow, or choices either. What if someone made a mistake! That would be be crazy.
After leaving the Giver, Jonas thought back to the sled and why sameness was decided.
