I was raised right here in the Dominican Republic, but my family is leaving the country due to the cruel dictator, Rafael Trujillo. My father was involved in a plan to overthrow the dictator, and it's too dangerous for my family to stay here.

Immigrating to the U.S. ameliorated my inspiration for writing, especially having to pay close attention to learning the English language.
I graduated from Abbot Academy in 1967, attended Connecticut College, then transferred to Middlebury College in Vermont, where I then graduated in 1971. I also earned my Master's Degree in creative writing from Syracuse University in 1975.
