  • Symbol
  • Symbol
  • Imagery
  • A symbol that appears in the story is the scarlet ibis. It is a bright red bird that came from Florida because of a hurricane and it was not suppose to live that long flying all the way to the Carolina's. The symbol is that the bird i has lasted longer than it should have and then it falls out of the tree and dies. It symbolizes that the boy doodle has lived longer than he should have and he gets tired and ends up dying with blood all over him making him red. It really means that the kid lived longer than he should have and he was going to die soon.
  • Theme
  • This symbol is the coffin that was made for Doodle because he was expected to die very soon after birth. The coffin is a symbol of how the boy was suppose to die after birth and he lives longer than he was suppose to. It symbolizes that he could still die sometime soon. It really mean that they still expect him to die.
  • Dynamic Character
  • Imagery is a visual description or figurative language being used. "I t was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that the ibis lit in the bleeding tree. The flower garden was stained with rotting brown magnolia petals and ironweeds grew rank amid the purple phlox. The five o’clocks by the chimney still marked time, but the oriole nest in the elm was untenanted and rocked back and forth like an empty cradle. The last graveyard flowers were blooming, and their smell drifted across the cotton field and through every room of our house, speaking softly the names of our dead." Page 350
  • Personal reaction
  • I think the theme of the story is pride. I chose this theme because the brother should take pride in having a brother like Doodle even though he has a disability. I also think that Doodle should have pride in who he is and not think that he is worthless because he can do a lot of things. "He had failed and we both knew it, so we started back home, racing the storm." "Once, he could go no further, so he collapsed on the ground and began to cry."
  • A dynamic character in the story is the old brother of Doodle. He is dynamic because he went through a lot of changes and they were not little changes they were big changes in his feeling about his brother Doodle. He has changed a lot because when his brother was first born he did not want to have a brother like Doodle because oh how he was disabled. He wanted to kill him so that he would not be embarrassed by him. Bu then towards the end of the story he likes having him as a brother and teaches him how to do a lot of things that he was not expected to be able to do. So he went from wanting to kill his brother to wanting him to live and not die.
  • I feel that it was a good way to end the story because i liked the symbolic relationship between doodle and the Ibis. I think the brother is a good brother because he decided that Doodle is his brother and that he should help him learn to do things. Like walk, run, and swim. So overall he is a good brother and takes care of Doodle and doesn't want him to die.
