The titanic sunk in 1912 contrary to what everyone believed, as it was believed to be unsinkable (this was when the play was set)
There was death and destruction of whole generations due to WW1. This mixed the social classes, and the upper class started to take more social responsibility. 1914-1918
During the time that the USA was capitalist, the upper class relied on the lower class to make money. The banks made an error, meaning they had to take lower classes money to recover. This is known as wall street crash (1930)
1939-1945 WW2 occurred, this made the social classes mix, like bees in a hive
Priestley wanted a mix of social class/ equality.
We are the best of friends!
1946- This is when the play was first performed, it represented the social responsibility the upper class should take over the lower classes. Priestley was seen as radical and very controversial for that time.
