The Earl Of Tennessee
Elenita, Cards, Palm, Water
Esperanza says Ruthie is "like a wild animal in a house for the first time" (Cisneros 68). Ruthie doesn't seem to have an education or a job. This fits into the theme by showing that because she's a girl with a lower economic status, she isn't offered much of a chance at a successful life. This is a simile because it uses "like" to compare Ruthie to an animal.
Esperanza describes the old man opening his door "like books that have been left out in the rain" (Cisneros 70). This shows how little Esperanza sees of her neighbor. People expect him to work and provide for him and his wife. She doesn't know much about him besides the fact that he repairs jukeboxes. No one really knows what his wife looks like either, she seems to never be around. This example of a simile because it compares the door opening with rainy books
An old lady telling Esperanza's fortune says, " A home in the heart" (Cisneros, 64) meaning that Esperanza is too ashamed about her material possessions and needs to focus on things that actually matter. This ties into the theme by showing that society has taught Esperanza that she should be ashamed of her life and what she has. This is a metaphor because it is saying that your home IS in your heart.
