The author uses imagery, such as in the sentences,"The day was growing steamy, and the ocean air smelled like warm olives. Jack bounced from the dry, sea-worn stones down to the darker, seaweed colored boulders below."(page 30)
The author also uses many similes throughout the novel. For example,page 31 states,"...sitting around a flat rock as if it were a table..."
Lastly, the author foreshadows. This is stated on page 115,"...so he threw on his backpack and hustled down the road to catch the island explorer again."
