Storyboard Text

  • One beautiful Autumn day, Abby and her friend Mia went on a walk in the woods.
  • The next morning, Abby woke up and had a fever and pain in her joints and muscles.
  • Honey, did you do a tick check last night?
  • No, I forgot.
  • Abby and her mom found a red bulls eye rash around a tick that was embedded in her skin.
  • What's lyme disease?
  • Abby's mom took her to the emergency room to get tested for lyme disease.
  • It looks like you have lyme disease.
  • Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. It can cause stiffness, swelling, and pain in joints and muscles, fatigue, fever, or malaise.
  • You can take some antibiotics such as Doxycycline, Ceftriaxone, and Cefuroxime to kill the bacteria, and Ibuprofen to help with the pain.
  • What can we do to treat lyme disease?
  • Abby took the antibiotics that the doctor recommended and fully recovered in about three weeks. She still takes walks in the woods, but now she always remembers to do a tick check afterwards.
