King Hamlet has passed away leaving behind his son Hamlet and his wife Gertrude. Gertrude has already married his brother-now King Claudius. The first scene starts off with three watchmen and Horatio finding the ghost of former King Hamlet.
The conflict of the story is when young Hamlet finds out about his father's ghost and his father's ghost reveals that King Claudius poisoned him and asks young Hamlet to avenge his death.
He tells Ophelia he did love her once, but then turns around and says he never loved her at all. Meanwhile everyone around him thinks he has gone mad.
The rising action begins when Hamlet reenacts his father's death in a play with his mother and King Claudius watching. He also acts drunk around Ophelia. King Claudius gets angry and makes the lights come back on and leaves the play room.
King Claudius invites Hamlets friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to spy on Hamlet and take him to england. Gertrude wants to talk to her son privately and she thinks Hamlet is mad. While they are talking he hears behind the curtains and think its Claudius, and stabs him but it ends up being Polonius, Polonius dies.
Ophelia drowns and Hamlet jumps in after her at her funeral. Laertes asks him for a duel because of Claudius. Claudius gives Laertes a poisoned sword. They have a duel and queen Gertrude dies from poisoning. The other three- Claudius, Hamlet, and Laertes die from getting stabbed with the poisoned sword. Hamlet tells people he thinks Fortinbras should be king after their death.
