Soon, the bell rung for the day, telling everyone to go home. Danny sighed a breath of relief. He had not had a good day. He got in trouble, he was late, and he lost his books. What more could go wrong! I just want to go home, I want to see Mum, I want this day to be over! Danny thought. While waiting in the pickup, Danny saw his Mum’s car and made his way over. She greeted him with a wide smile. ‘Hi Danny! How was your first day?’She asked eagerly. ‘Fine.’, Danny replied sullenly.
His Mum noticed his sadness, with a small frown. ‘Don’t be sad for too long, Danny, I’ve got your surprise waiting at home! Would you like to see it?’ she asked. My surprise! Danny thought, I’d completely forgotten! Danny nodded enthusiastically. By the time the car pulled up in their driveway, Danny could barely sit still. He was buzzing with excitement. ‘Where is it?’ Danny asked. ‘In the backyard, go have a look!’ She said, smiling. He raced out oft he car, through the house into the backyard. And there it was.
It stood before him, sturdy and tall. A tree? He thought, confused. This is the surprise? The sturdy tree towered before him, then almost leaned towards him as it reached the top. Its branches fanned out upwards, with leaves of jade green on each stem that gave off a beautiful glow. The tree stood out from the rest of his backyard. It’s immensely broad trunk was smooth, a shade of the deepest brown with gnarly, claw-like roots that hooked into the earth.
