  • Abigail Williams, a young girl in the village of Salem, is responsible for the hysteria taking over in the trial The Crucible.
  • Abigail Williams is the main cause of this hysteria, jealousy takes over her, wanting more power she starts a witchcraft problem in Salem.
  • The witchcraft hysteria is taking over the whole village, but not only because of one girl, the character Mary Warren is also a superior in these predicaments.
  • "Abigail. Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam's dead sisters."
  • Mary has caused witchcraft problems upon the Proctor family, the poppet with Elizabeth and then the lies about John in the court.
  • Abby pretends to see Mary Warren's spirit as a bird in the middle of court and the other girls follow her lead, fearfully as they pretend to all be possessed and taken over by the spirits.
  • Judge Danforth, the main character in charge of the court, is not apart of the lies from the girls but instead is encouraging them.
  • “ Mary Warren. Why, I think the poppet is mine. Why I made it in court, sir, and give it to Goody Proctor tonight. Ask Abby, Abby sat beside me when I made it” (Miller 176.)
  • he is not going to show the village he was fooled by little girls, so instead he gives into what Abby has to say, knowing this is a scam he still is going along with the punishments.
  • Mary Warren had agreed to go in front of the court to tell the truth of all the lies, but as Abby and the girls put Mary under pressure she lies in front of the court, making Proctor seem like a guilty man.
  • “Danforth. Indeed not, but it strike hard upon me that she will dare come here with such a tale. Now, Mr. Proctor, before I decide whether I shall hear you or not, it is my duty to tell you this. We burn a hot fire here; it melts down all concealment” (Miller 183.)
  • Mr. Danforth will not listen to others testimonies, he does not want to seem as though he is being played by the girls so the judge gives in to the guilt of Abigail, ands goes along with whatever she has to say.
