  • Conflict
  • Irony
  • Point Of View
  • The conflict is man vs man and man vs nature. The man vs man conflict is between Rainsford and General Zaroff. The man vs nature conflict is between Rainsford and the jungle. A example of man vs man isThe general made one of his deepest bows. "I see," he said. "Splendid! One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard, Rainsford." . . . (Connell 36)
  • Literary Device
  • ''One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed on guard, Rainsford had never slept in a better bed.'' (Connell 36) This is an example of situational irony.
  • Literary Device
  • The point of view is third person omniscient. ''Rainsford!'' Screamed the general how in God's name did you get here.'' (Connell 36) This is third person omniscient because it tells the thoughts and feelings of the characters.
  • Theme
  • ''off there to the right somewhere is a large island.'' (Connell 19) This is foreshadowing. The reason it is foreshadowing because it's telling you an important detail. It tells where the setting is taken place and how Rainsford will be stranded on this island.
  • ''I have played the fox, now I must play the captive the fable.'' (Connell 31-32) This is a metaphor because Rainsford is comparing himself to a fox and a cat.
  • Rainsford and General Zaroff roles change. The lesson learned is Rainsford doesn't care about the animals feelings when he hunts. Once he becomes the prey his view on hunting changes. He feels what the animals feel. Everyone and everything has feelings. We are equal.
