Do I really want to stay with Abnegation? Maybe I can lie so convincingly it will become reality?
My name is Beatrice. I live in a city that is divided into five factions: each one devoted to a different virtue. Erudite (The intelligent) Amity, (The Peaceful) Candor (The honest) Abnegation (THe selfless) and Dauntless (The brave)
My whole family, (my mom, dad, and brother) has always been Abnegation. We are the absolute selfless, and do not do anything that would get us accused of self-indulgence. I try my best to be selfless. Today is the day that I take the aptitude test, then decide which faction I will devote my life to... forever.
During the aptitude test, I experience many virtual experiences that are frightening, and make me angry. I face a vicious dog, stop it from attacking a child, and lie to a man on the bus about knowing a murderer that I momentarily recognize. The woman running the test tells me I am "Divergent" Very dangerous. I can't tell anyone, or I'll die.
Since I was not assigned to a faction, I had to just pick one. My brother, Caleb was Abnegation, no doubt. But as he performed the familiar blood-on-the-stones ritual, I was astonished when he chose Erudite. As I went back and forth between staying with my family or not, I feel a sudden force yanks me forward so my blood waters the fire of Dauntless.
On the way to the Dauntless compound, I experience my first ever rooftop jump, wild run through the darkness, and leaping out of moving vehicles. I fight and train with my new faction family. I break bones, bruise skin, and cut myself infinite times. I get a tattoo and change my appearence into something my parents would never approve of.
