One day Tom Walker had been to a distant part of the neighborhood. He considered a short-cut homeward, through the swamp.
The devil wanted to make a deal with Tom. The deal was he would show him the way to the gold, but only if he gets his soul.
Tom's wife wants him to make the deal and when he refuses, she goes into the woods to deal with the devil herself. She is never seen again. Tom revisits the devil in the forest and agrees to become a usurer in exchange for the treasure
Tom gets really rich from his new job, but as he gets older he worries that his deal with the devil will affect his fate in the afterlife. He starts to attend church and carries a Bible with him wherever he goes
When Tom is at work one day, he hears a knock on his door. The devil has come for his soul and then he takes tom away on a big black horse.
When the townspeople go to look for all of Tom's money that he had made, they find that his house has gone up in flames and there is no trace of his former riches.
