Storyboard Text

  • In 1789, France was in extreme debt from the lascivious    spending of the royals and wars. To solve this problem, king Louis XVI called a meeting of Estates General
  • Each estate presented solutions to solve  the debt, but several of them are just concered about keeping their wealth.
  • The first estate was the clergy, the second was the nobility, and the third are the middle class and peasants.  The third  estate consisted of 97% of the population.
  • Tax the peasants more!!
  • Tax everyone equally!!
  • The first and second estates had more power though. Everything the  3rd estate suggested was out voted by the first and second by a 2/3 vote.
  • Everyone  is equal and should be taxed as such. the nobility and clergy have money to support the country
  • NO!!!
  • The third estate decided they had had enough. They decided that they were going to form a national assembly and demand to have fair voting rights. However, when they went to go back to the estates general meeting, they discovered they had been locked out.
  • They decided to meet outside the palace, in what we would call now a tennis court. there, they met and discussed laws and the  ways to fix the national debt.
  • There, they vowed to keep meeting until a new constitution was reached where they were represented fairly, in what we call today, the Tennis Court oath.
  • we promise to keep meeting until we are rightfully represented  in our government!
