  • Cuba rebelled against Spain in 1898, and asked the USA to help.
  • CUBAN RECONCENTRACTION CAMPS CAPTURE THOUSANDS
  • Then, while patrolling near Spanish boats, the U.S.S. Maine exploded.
  • IT MUST HAVE BEEN THE SPANISH!
  • Despite these incidents, President McKinley kept peace with Spain.
  • I don't think we need to attack!
  • Newspapers used yellow journalism to exaggerate stories so that the USA would want to take a hand.
  • These demands to Spain were met... all except Cuban independence.
  • - money from the destruction of the Maine - no more reconc. camps - Cuban independence - truce in Cuba
  • Maybe this was an accident, but the US public and press blamed Spain anyways. The US got closer to war.
  • By the end of the war, Spain had lost its entire fleet and a lot of soldiers.
  • But, finally, McKinley was forced to take action, or lose control of his country. He sent a list of demands.
  • America bought Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines for 20 million.
  • $20,000,000
  • McKinley sent the order to attack the Spanish. This meant war! However, Spain was outmatched.
  • The Treaty of Paris was signed by USA and Spain. It said Spain freed Cuba and USA bought 3 territories.
  • TREATY of PARIS
  • America came out of the war very happy- we won, got 3 good territories, and lost very few.
  • However, these territories were not meant for statehood.
