The Greeks miraculously win against the Persian unit with flanking strategies and close-range combat. Incredibly, someone on the Greek side thew a rock at Mardonius, who actually died from it.
With the death of their leader, the Persians had no more orders and retreated in disarray.
The city of Plataea remains safe and under Greek control, costing only 159 Greek lives. Only 43,000 Persians survived in total, and only 3,000 of the ones who attacked survived.
