This is Martin Luther. He is a German Monk born in Eislenben, Germany. He studied theology at the University of Erfunt. While he was here he started to question the practices of the Catholic Church. Martin wrote a list of grievances called the 95 Theses.
You're a Heretic, you will leave this church and never some back
After Martin had written his 95 Theses he nailed them to the Wittenberg Castle Church door on the 31st of October 1517. The main practices that Martin disagreed with the paying of indulgences. This was when people were paying money to the church to forgive them of their sins. He also disagreed with the amount of power the pope possessed.

When Martin had done this it caused a lot of conflict with the Church and the Catholic Leaders ordered him to take back his grievances however he refused. Martin did not intend to start this reformation however, he did.
On November 9th, 1518 Pope Leo condemned Martin's writings as a conflict with the teachings of the church. On the 3rd of January, 1519 Pope Leo excommunicated Martin and called him a heretic.
