The Germans marched through Belgium into France, getting the British involved through their alliegence with Belgium.
At the Battle of Mons the Germans suffered heavy casualties but pushed on through Mons further into France towards Paris.
When Russia attacked Germany, it forced the Germans to send troops east: meaning there were less troops on the offensive.
The French and British troops pushed the Germans back after a long time of deadlock.
Resulting in the failure of the Schlieffen plan!
