After a while Lizabeth and her friends got tired of the game they were playing. They decided to head over to Miss. Lottie's and bother her. Lizabeth starts a chant with her friends saying that miss lottie is a witch and were throwing rocks at her marigolds. Everyone hates miss Lottie only because they believe that the pretty marigolds should not be grown at such a sad place.
As Lizabeth and her younger brother were ready for dinner, they hear their parents fighting. Lizabeth listens and hears her dad crying for the first time. Her father lost his job and does not know what to do anymore. For now, her mom is the one that helps the family the most. This is a tough situation for Lizabeth's family.
After a while, Lizabeth gets very angry and leaves with her brother. She leaves to Miss. Lottie's house and starts ripping and destroying her marigolds while crying. She lets all of her frustration out on Miss. Lottie. She turns back and sees Miss. Lottie watching her. LIzabeth feels bad for her actions and comes to realize the true meaning of the marigolds. Lizabeth comes to realize that she was acting childish and is beginning to mature.
