On his way home from law school Martin Luther got caught in a storm and was so scared he prayed to St. Anne that if she helped him he would enter a monastery.
After surviving the storm Luther was true to his word and became a monk in the Augustine Eremite Order.
After entering a monastery he became a theology teacher. Luther´s studies caused him to doubt some of the churches doctrines and practices.
One of the practices he started to doubt was the selling of indulgences. John Tetzel was an indulgence salesman who Luther despised. indulgences were when people would pay to get out of their sins.
To protest indulgences and other abuses Luther wrote his 95 theses or questions taking issue with the church and then nailed them to the church door.
The printing press helped spread his 95 theses and the church found out. A representative of the pope summoned him to confess his wrong for questioning church doctrine. Luther refused and then during a debate stated the church council made the wrong decision. Pope Leo X condemned his teachings. He was soon excommunicated after burning a copy of a condemnation on his teachings.
