After the Great Depression of 1929, feeling helpless due to financial obstacles, Jay's father committed suicide , causing his mother to take on a job that didn't allow her to spend time with her toddlers and later on marrying a man that did nothing but further destroy Jay's relationship with his family.
At age nine, Jay contracyed tonsillitis, making him extremly sick. The family doctor, Dr. Rosenbloom came to treat him. Seeing how respectable he is, Jay became determined to wear the white coat in the future(become a doctor).
In Highschool, his physics teacher encouraged him to go to college. Conviently, Jay's mother managed to get Jay's tuition from a Hungarian widow with a large inheritance, allowing Freireich to attend the University of Illinois. Afterwards, he completed his military service
Freireich works on the leukemia floor he is very stoic towards his patients and their families. He does not sympathize with them whatsoever. He stays unaffected.
What do you mean doc? Please bring her back
Your daughter is dead. I couldn't do anything. oops
Although cold-hearted, Jay figured out that the low platelets led to more bleeding. When his request for fresh blood got rejected, Jay held his own blood drive, eventhough it was against regulation.
We NEED platelets. You WILL give me fresh blood or I will hold my own blood drive
Not happening. Mr. Jay, having your own blood donors is against the regulation.
Jay's innovative idea for blood bags and courage created a cure for childhood leukemia.
