  • My name is John Locke and I believe that in a state of nature, no one's life, liberty or property would be safe because there would be no government or laws to protect them.
  • My name is Voltaire and I believe that the government must protect people's basic rights. This included freedom of speech and religion.
  • My name is Montesquieu and I believe that legislative, executive, and judicial powers were separate and kept each other in check to prevent any branch from becoming too powerful. I believed that uniting these powers, as in the monarchy of Louis XIV, would lead to despotism.
  • My name is Thomas Hobbes and I believed that a government headed by a king was the best form that the sovereign could take.
  • My name is Jean-Jacques Rousseau and I believe that in a direct democracy in which everyone voted to express the general will and to make the laws of the land.
