Arabs were Polytheistic nomads that lived in the Arabian Peninsula, and they were ruled over by a sheikh.
Muhammad was born in Makkah, and he recieved revelations from Allah. Many people in Makkah didn't believe him, so he made a great journey to gain followers. Muhammad would become a religious and political leader, forming Islam and the Quran.

After Muhammad died, Abu Bakr (his father in law) took over as caliph. After he died, Ali (Abu's son) was elected and later assassinated. After, General Mu'awiya took over and started the Ummayad Dynasty.
Ali's decendants are the true leaders!
The Ummayad leaders were true leaders!
Remember the difference of following a religion vs. Fundamentalism and Extremism. Fundamentalism is literal interpretation of holy scripture and extremism is a way of practicing that is unorthodox or not in the mainstream.
