  • "'I (Jack) was just waiting for a moment to decide where to stab him... I was going to... Next time--!' He snatched his knife out of the sheath and slammed it into a tree trunk, Next time there would be no mercy." (Golding 31).
  • "(He) held up a mask that drew their eyes and appalled them. He began to dance and his laughter became bloodthirsty snarling... The mask was a thing on its own.." (Golding 64).
  • "Jack had Robert by the hair and was brandishing his knife... The chanting rose ritually as at the last moment of a dance or a hunt. 'Kill the pig! Cut her throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!'" (Golding 114).
