  • In "Simon Birch" Simon's parents think that Simon isn't how he should be,"normal", they think he isn't a good enough son for them. Although Simon has Ms. Wentworth who is like a mother figure to him his real parents don't care about him.
  • Parenting in "The Scarlet Ibis"
  • Simon had a best friend, Joe, who's family accepted Simon as one of them. Joe was a really good friend to Simon, even though simon killed Joe's mother he ended up forgiving him and became best friends again. At school Simon as made friends with the younger kids because they saw him as one of them for his size.
  • Friendship in "The Scarlet Ibis"
  • I can't run. Wait up!
  • Simon was also outdoors all the time with Joe he loved going to the lake and seeing if he could beat the latest time that he could hold his breathe. Being outdoors was Simon's escape where he could be himself with Joe all by themselves.
  • Nature in "The Scarlet Ibis"
  • In "The Scarlet Ibis" Doodle doesn't feel loved by his parents just like Simon but they didn't have any faith in him at all they just thought he would die at the beginning, they did't even name him for a while in the story.
  • Doodle only had one friend which was his brother. The Brother was the one person who pushed Doodle to try to be as "normal" as possible. The Brother pushed Doodle so hard he ended up dieing from it.
  • Doodle spent most of his time outdoors with his brother since the story was from before electronics were invented. Doodle and The Brother were always outside exploring the swamp. Doodle's favorite thing to do was make flower crowns out of actual flowers.
