Mars is name Mars because when Roman Astronomers saw it and thought it was red as blood so they named it after the Roman god of war.

There have been 15 spacecrafts to go to Mars since 2004 ,but the first successful one was Mariner 4. This spacecraft transmitted photos of Mars.

It is Earths neighbor being 49 million miles away from it. Compared to Earth it has a thinner atmosphere, about 11% of the mass ,and 53% of the diameter.
Mars Topography is dry, rocky surface with a iron-rich dust. On the northern hemisphere it is low-lying plains ,but on the southern hemisphere it is filled with impact craters. The ground is filled with permafrost for several kilometers.
