The narrator is being questioned if he forgot to live by his way of being a member of the black culture.
"You're black and living in the south- did you forget how to live?"(174)
Defying stereotypes against black southerners puts a façade to show the ignorant the unexpected.
"I'll have orange juice, toast, and coffee."
