  • important events from chapter one
  • Meredith Allen
  • Moishe sharing what he has gone through, and having no one believe him. This moment was crucial because it initiated the idea of the townspeople being in denial, and the horrors they were to face. "Moishe was not the same. The joy in his eyes was gone{...}But people not only refused to believe his tales, they refused to listen{,}" (Wiesel, 7).
  • Germans infiltrating Sighet and turning it into a ghetto. This event plays to the idea of the Jewish people's denial towards the harm in front of them. "The Germans were already in our town, the Fascists were already in power, the verdict was already out-and the Jews of Sighet were smiling[,]" (Wiesel, 10).
  • The Jewish people being moved into a larger ghetto. This moment is important in representing the gradual change in the attitude of authority. "That was when I began to hate them, and my hatred remains our only link today[,]" (Wiesel, 19).
  • Elie and his family being forced into cattle cars. This scene is important because the event is what causes the highest point of worry and suspense throughout the chapter. "One person was placed in charge of every car: if someone managed to escape, that person would be shot[,]" (Wiesel, 22).
