  • A
  • “A blessing on the righteous Colony of the Massachusetts, where iniquity is dragged out into the sunshine! Come along, Madam Hester, and show your scarlet letter in the market-place!”
  • A
  • A rose bush. “It may serve, let us hope, to symbolise some sweet moral blossom that may be found along the track, or relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow.”
  • A
  • “And now, Mistress Prynne...I leave thee alone; alone with they infant and thy scarlet letter!”
  • The town beadle takes Hester Prynne out to the marketplace so that she may be publicly scrutinized for her sin of adultery.
  • A few years later...
  • Hester’s husband, who arrives in town from England to see Hester being publicly sentenced, soon becomes vengeful and motions for Hester to not reveal the identity of the father of Pearl, her child.
  •  Hester’s husband, revealed to be named Roger Chillingworth, visits Hester in prison and wants revenge on the father of her child.
  • Hester, now moved to a cabin with Pearl, makes a living by sewing clothes for the townspeople, though she is still looked down upon.
  • Watching Pearl grow up as a toddler, she becomes worried and perhaps fearful of her, seeing angry, almost demon-like behavior.
