The carbon atom is now in the surface ocean water. It is going to the deep ocean because it was part of an ocean organism that died.
The carbon atom is in the deep ocean now. It is going to go to the surface ocean because it was an ocean organism that died and it has floated to the surface.
The carbon atom's final destination is the surface ocean. The carbon cycle will soon take the carbon atom on its next adventure.
