Winston often writes in his diary. However, he is afraid the Party will find out and he will be punished for committing thoughtcrime.
Winston works as a records editor at the Ministry of Truth. He rewrites articles about history, and changes it so that it agrees with the Party's vision about the world. The old documents that have been changed are then put into machines in order to destroy the information.

There is no way in this world where people are safe from being controlled. Even the children spy on their parents, and if they commit thoughtcrime, their own children will report them to the Party.
Winston goes for a walk and enters a pub, where he starts talking to an old man. Winston wants to know about life before the war. However, the man's memory is too vague for him to answer the questions accurately.
Winston receives a note from a dark-haired girl, who he had noticed before, but he thought she was a political spy following Winston because of his thoughts about the Part. They later on meet surrendered by many others so that they would not be noticed, and plan to meet again.
