At this moment in time, the narrator accepts the fact that the old man's "evil eye" is haunting him all hours of the day. He hides this truth, however, by cooking the old man food and taking care of him.
Every night for seven whole nights, the insane man sneaks into the old man's room and watches him sleep, contemplating whether or not to kill the innocent man.
On the eighth night, the old man awakes in a cold sweat. The narrator made a sound while sneaking in his room, and woke him. Then suddenly, the insane man screams, drags the old man off his bed, pulls the heavy bed over him, and suffocates him.
