Storyboard Text

  • That was when I began to hate them, and my hatred remains our only link today. They were our first oppressors. They were the first faces of hell and death.
  • This is when Elie started to hate the people who did this to him, this hatred continues throughout the book and gets stronger.
  • This is how the power of the SS dawned into Elie's life, his father is getting beat but he is so scared of the SS to do anything.
  • I stood petrified. What had happened to me? My father had just been struck, in front of me, and I had not even blinked. I had watched and kept silent. Only yesterday, I would have dug my nails into this criminal's flesh.
  • Now Elie changes into getting mad at his dad for something Idek did. This shows how he has changed throughout the novel.
  • I felt anger at that moment,it was not directed at the Kapo but at my father. Why couldn't he have avoided Idek's wrath? That was what life in a concentration camp had made me...
  • This quote demonstrates how he no longer cares about his fathers death as long as the nazi's suffer for what they did. He later feels guilty about his thoughts.
  • I anxiously thought of my father, who was at work. But I was glad nevertheless. To watch the factory go up in flames-- what revenge!
  • Sometimes Elie thinks about his father as a burden but in this quote it show how he is still worried about him and cares for him.
  • And my father? I first thought of him now. how would he pass selection? He had aged so much...
  • One day when I was able to get up, I decided to look at myself in the mirror on the opposite wall. I had not seen myself since the ghetto. From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating me. The look in his eyes as he gazed at me has never left me.
  • Finally, this quote make Elie aware of how much he has changed during his time at Aushwitz and how he refers to his image as someone else because he is a new person.
