  • Hi! Can you please help me understand what the disparities in health related to race and class?
  • Why yes, yes I can!
  • I will break it up for you! First of all, we will talk about health disparities in health related to a persons class. A person's health differs greatly regarding their class. A person in a higher class can afford more necessities to keep them heathy; such as gym memberships, healthy food, medication, better health care, etc.
  • Okay that makes sense!
  • Furthermore, the lower class cannot afford such necessities and luxuries. Instead of buy an expensive salad, gym membership or medication, they have to opt for the cheaper and usually unhealthier option, not out of choice, but because their income halts them.
  • Well that doesn't seem fair!
  • Now onto racial disparities in health. Although race shouldn't affect a person's health, it does. Racial segregation present in the United States results in African American's living in poorer, low income areas. So living conditions that are less than ideal thus causes an unhealthy lifestyle.
  • Wow I never knew that!
  • Furthermore, a person's race can actually determine what diseases they are prone to.  An example of this would be Sickle Cell Anemia. African Americans are more prone to being born with this disease than someone of Caucasian decent.
  • Interesting!
  • Lastly, I found it interesting that class has such a huge impact on someone's all around health. I thought being healthy and living a healthy lifestyle was just a choice, however, now I see that it is much easier being health if you are of a higher class versus lower class.
  • I find that interesting too!!
