  • Willy Loman is the tragic hero in the play, Death of a Salesman. He goes through many challenges such as lack of money, thoughts of suicide and his sons unsuccessful lives. His tragic flaw, along with these challenges are what leads to his death is what makes him a tragic hero.
  • Peripeteia
  • You're firing me, Howard? i was suppose to be the boss by now, i named you Howard!
  • Listen, Willy, maybe you can come back when you are better and we can find something you can do, alright?
  • Willy Loman's hamartia (tragic flaw) is excessive pride.
  • Anagnorisis
  • Willy Loman shows hubris by denying a steady job from his wealthy friend, Charlie.
  • Catharsis
  • This is the only way my sons will like me and everything will be better.
  • Willy Loman's reversal of fortune occurs when his boss, Howard, fires him because he is no longer needed after working there for many years.
  • Willy Loman never goes through Anagnorisis because he never has a moment of self discovery. He never realized his mistakes and never desired to make them right, in the proper way.
  • At the end of the performance, the audience was emotionally moved because Willy commits suicide. We feel pity for him even though he had the chance to make things right.
