  • Young John Lewis would preach to his chickens almost every night. This is where he realized he wanted to be seen and heard. He then developed the passion to preach.

  • In this scene John Lewis becomes inspired by the words of Martin Luther King Jr. He realized that his own church didn't show him all the opportunities he had but Dr. King did.

  • Lewis and his friends were being spoken to harshly. They were told they couldn't be served because they were colored. They didn't act out they simply left, this showed their maturity and who they were as a person.

  • This was the first day Young John Lewis preached in front of a crowd at a public sermon and his words spoke to the people. He pleased the crowd and saw his name printed for the first time.
  • Lewis stayed by his obstinate personality even towards his family when chicken was served for dinner. He protested against eating their chickens for dinner. He stood for what he believes is right which reveals a lot to his developing identity
  • At the meeting Dr. Kings words had a negative impact on Lewis. He broke the reality of what could possibly happen when trying the state. Those simple words scared him, and left him heartbroken when his parents decided against it due to the possible outcomes. The power of those words made him lose hope.
