The Lottery takes place on June 27th. It is a clear summer day in a small village of about 300 people, between the post office and the bank. The time is around 10 AM and this gathering will last till 12 PM. Tessie Hutchinson is the protagonist of the story.
Everyone in town has arrived at the gathering.. Mr. Summers arrives with the box, where the slips of paper are. Mrs. Hutchinson arrives late but in a good mood. They make sure everyone is here, and start calling the men up by their last names alphabetically. After everyone has got a slip, everyone opens the slips of paper simultaneously. They try to figure out who has the slip with the black dot on it.
Bill Hutchinson is the winner.
After Bill Hutchinson wins Tessie starts complaining. Due to him being the winner they put back the slip with the black dote and the whole Hutchinson family must pick again. Tessie is then found the winner.
Due to Tessie winning, she is now stoned to death by the rest of the people in town.
The conflict of the story is person vs. society, The theme is that just because its tradition doesn't mean its right.
