  • bye Mama, bye Bernie
  • Bernie, the next door neighbor had found mama and Heidi in front of her door crying. Bernie had agoraphobia, so following the cries of Heidi, she found a hole in her closet which connected the two apartments. Mama had a mental disability so Bernie was the main caregiver of Heidi. In addition, Bernie cooked, cleaned and covered their expenses for them, and was a homeschool teacher for Heidi. Moreover, Bernie taught mama a lot of things too. They were very poor, so they sometimes used Heidi’s "lucky streak" to pay for utilities. Mama’s name was So B. It, or so they thought. Due to only being able to pronounce 23 words, mama couldn't express herself and she had a mystery word “soof”, which made no sense to neither Heidi nor Bernie.
  • Main Event # 2
  • Leave right now, and don't ever come back again.
  • The conflict in the story is that Heidi wanted to find the answer to her questions and especially the word “soof”. Mama couldn’t answer any questions, because of her limited vocabulary. One day when Bernie and Heidi were organizing the cabinet, they found an old photographic tape. When they got the pictures made, they found pictures of mama very young and also pregnant. One picture read in the background “Hilltop Home, Liberty, New York”. When mama saw the pictures, she responded to one of them with the word “soof”. After that, constant calls were made to Hilltop, and when they were ignored, Heidi decided to visit there herself. Bernie couldnt go with her due to her illness, and neither could mama. Bernie promptly restricted her, but she  anyway, due to her strong passion.
  • Main Event # 3
  • Thank you for taking care of me Ruby.
  • On the bus ride to Liberty New York, Heidi met interesting people and realized many things about her life. She also met a young lady who gave her an idea. What if “soof” was Heidi’s father. She was robbed earlier and got a taxi ride to Hilltop using her “lucky streak”. She went inside a taxi company booth and saw jelly beans sitting on a shelf. Next, to them, a sign read “guess the correct number of jelly beans and earn a free ride”. Fascinated by the idea, she got the correct amount and was taken up to Hilltop Home at no cost.
  • Main Event # 4
  • Mama was pregnant with me, and Elliot is my father. Which also means that Thurman Hill is my grandfather.
  • It was very cold and rainy when Heidi arrived. By the time, the taxi reached Hilltop Home, Heidi was shaking and shivering in her damp wet clothes.  Heidi was treated poorly by Thurman Hill, the owner of Hilltop Home. Thurman Hill avoided her questions and demanded her to leave. However, at Hilltop Home there was a mentally disabled man in a wheelchair by the name of Elliot. Elliot was the son of Thurman Hill. As soon as he noticed Heidi, he said mama’s word, “soof”.  Heidi was shocked to hear him say it, but due to Thurman Hill’s indignant behavior, she couldn't talk to Elliot.
  • Soof!!
  • Roy and Ruby, a caregiver at Hilltop, took Heidi home and provided her with care. They fed Heidi, gave her a bath, and furnished her with a bed to sleep in. The following day, Roy didn’t take Heidi back to Hilltop until later in the afternoon. Heidi and Ruby spend the afternoon together, eating breakfast and inspecting the photographs one by one. When Roy returned, he said that Thurman Hill was interested in the photos and would like to have a talk with Heidi.  Roy then drove Heidi up to Hilltop Home, where Thurman Hill and the county clerk were waiting for their arrival.
  •  At Hilltop Home, Thurman Hill talked to Heidi, explaining her past. He said that Diana Demuth had given birth to a mental child by the name of Sophia. Mama called herself So B. It, because she couldn't pronounce Sophia. He explained that Elliot and Mama were best friends and when they found out that Sophia was pregnant, Thurman Hill sent Heidi, Mama, and Diana DeMuth away to live in Reno. Diana DeMuth died because of a traffic accident, the day that Bernie had found Sophia and Heidi. When Heidi finally found out the information, she was eager to inform Bernie. However, it took Bernie a long time to answer her call, and when she did, she said that it wasn't the time to discuss that. Heidi was somewhat disappointed in Bernie ’s behavior and wondered about the reasoning behind it.
