#### Storyboard Text

• Hey guys! My name is Alex and I will help you with trigonometry! Let's see a basic example...
• So this is Shirley! She is standing 80 feet away from a lighthouse and her angle of elevation is 35 degrees. Using SOHCAHTOA find how high the lighthouse is.
• tan35=x/80
• First start by labeling the triangle sides. The side across from the 90o  degree angle is the hypotenuse, the side across the theta angle (35o )is the opposite, and the one next to the theta angle is the adjacent.
• opposite
• hypotenuse
• 35o
• So this is a lot easier than it seems! Since we have the value for the adjacent side of the triangle and we are looking for the opposite side of the angle, we can use tan (think SOHCAHTOA) to find the x.
• x
• 80 ft
• 35o
• *make sure your calculator is in degree mode*
• 1          2          3
• 1          2          3
• 80*0.7=x
• 7          8          9
• 4          5          6
• 0
• 4          5          6
• 7          8          9
• 0
• 1          2          3
• 1          2          3
• 0.7=x/80
• 7          8          9
• x=56 meters
• 4          5          6
• 0
• 4          5          6
• 7          8          9
• 0
• So the lighthouse is 56 meters tall. Now you know how to solve for a side of a right triangle!
