  • Martha, Do you have any suggestions for John who is in the preparation stage for quitting?
  • Yes, I found it extremely beneficial when we created a list of pros and cons to smoking and once I realized how much the benefits of smoking outweighed the few "pros" of smoking, I knew I had to quit.
  • I could do that. I think I can even get input from my family as they are completely supporting me on this decision and have been waiting for me to quit for a while now.

  • I think that was a very helpful exercise Martha and I feel that you would benefit from doing this John. My suggestion is that when you get home from group tonight, you sit down a create a list.
  • Thank you Martha for all of your suggestions to John today. I think it is important that we all support each other while we are in these different stages, especially suggesting different methods that have helped you get the stage you are currently at.

  • It is something I am still learning about everyday, but I found it very important to have the support from other people who are going through it with me. I am more than happy to offer advice and help when I can.
  • Thank you all for attending group today. I am very impressed with John's ability to realize he is ready to quit and also with the helpful suggestions made by group members. I think that your idea of smoking one less cigarette a day, especially at work since this is where you find yourself smoking the most would an excellent idea and I hope to hear about how it went next session. I hope you all have a great week and am very proud of you all.
  • Maybe that's how they meant it, but I didn't appreciate them acting as if I had some sort of problem, when I don't.
  • I'm sorry that your friends caused you stressed and didn't speak to you about this is a better manner. I know that they are only doing it because they want what is best for you and care for you.

  • Martha, what were some methods you implemented to motivate yourself to keep from smoking this weekend?
  • You know, I found what really helped was meditation. Whenever I began to felt the stress building up and the urge coming on, I gave myself a moment to take a couple of deep breaths and clear my head and I found the urge slowly subsiding. It took a couple of tries to get used to it, but I found it very helpful.
