Yolis just moved to Los Angeles from Mexico City due to her father's job and she's finding it hard to adjust to her new life. She's 16 and at this age many teens struggle to make friends or to fit in. For many years Mexican people have been discriminated and called criminals, which is a form of prejudice; this is what causes Yolis's shyness.
I must say, the next day when I had lunch with Suzy and my new group of friends, I wasn't lonely anymore.
Even my nickname "Yoyo" fits well with my personality!
"Welcome to our squad, can I call you Yoyo?"
"I swear Yolis, you're the FUNNIEST person I have ever met!!"
Straight after school, I went running home to my parents to tell them the great news.
"Oh! sweetie, I'm happy for you!"
"Remember Yolis, it's not about fitting in."
"Mom, Dad, I finally made friends and they are super cool!"
All this time I was afraid no one would want to talk to me, but in reality I was the only person who stopped myself from making friends and all because of my shyness.
